What does a pre-employment medical set out to achieve ?

We believe that pre-employment health screening is more than a "tick the box" exercise

The pre-employment medical is a tool that attempts to match the physical ability of the candidate to the physical demands of the job.

We all need to hire right, the alternative is just too costly. Valuable resources are wasted if employers hire and train new employees only to find out that they do not have the physical ability to perform the job.

Verifying that the candidate is medically fit for the role is good due diligence and will prevent trouble further down the line.

A physical job requires a physical medical, a pre-employment questionnaire is not sufficient to match the physical ability of the candidate to the physical demands of the job.

What are the benefits of pre-employment medicals ?

Matching the candidates to the physical requirements of the job.

Where does the pre-employment health screen best fit in the hiring process ?

Post-offer pre-employment health screening is more cost effective for the employer because you do not have to screen every applicant, only the ones that are made a conditional offer (that is an offer conditional on passing the medical). Carrying out the pre-employment medical at conditional offer stage bestows all of the benefits of doing a health screen.

Carrying out medicals after employment is not screening, only damage limitation. Few of the benefits of doing a medical accrue at this stage. Only one, by taking a detailed health history and carrying out a health exam, by documenting current medical conditions we reduce the liability risk somewhat, as we are requesting disclosure of health conditions and history.
